FRESHMAN DRAMA CURRICULUM
Each student will have demonstrated competent skills in the creative process, culture and history, and characteristics of dramatic expression as related to performing arts. Freshman Drama Description This course is designed to provide freshman students the opportunity to perform in front of others of their age with comparative comfort and ease. In order to accomplish this goal, students participate in a variety of projects which include two plays for the community. Time Allocation Ninety minutes daily for one smear Themes/Topics Mime Improvisational theatre Duet acting Solo acting Original small play production Projects/Speaker/Field Trips Mime to music Student written silent movie Improvisation groups Duets and monologues Student written one act plays involving current topics Student written fairy tale updates Two plays performed for the community--one for younger audiences and one for older Assessments Teacher constructed assessments Standards based assessments Grades and Performance Levels Grades are based upon participation, completion of assignments and work quality. Each student also receives a performance level rating. The rating is based upon assessments of the student's attainment of grade level expectations course expectations. Freshman Drama Expectations Interaction and artistic collaboration A. Understood and organized the interrelated responsibilities involved in theatre. B. Developed unified production concepts through research and collaboration among student directors, designers, and actors. C. Understood and applied group concepts such as cooperation, consensus, building ensemble, and risk-taking to theatre and daily life. D. Evaluated constructively their own and others' collaborative efforts and artistic choices. Storytelling, playwriting and directing A. Analyzed and interpreted the physical, emotional, intellectual, and social dimensions of characters. B. Used voice and movement for conscious communication of thought, feeling and character with a specific audience. C. Compared and demonstrated classical and contemporary acting styles and techniques. D. Used improvisation to interpret sub-text of scripted materials to create original scripts. Design and technical production A. Analyzed, researched, selected and designed appropriate theatrical settings. B. Understood and applied the functions of scenery, properties, lighting, sound, makeup and costume. C. Organized and performed technical responsibilities according to established theatrical practice, standards of safety, and environmental guidelines. Role of theater arts to culture and history A. Understood and described the functions, meanings, contributions, and significance of theatrical works within various cultures throughout history. B. Analyzed and applied knowledge of social, political, and dramatic aspects of various cultures throughout history in the development of theatrical productions. C. Researched, evaluated and synthesized cultural and historical information to support artistic choices. Traditional and modern forms of dramatic expression A. Read and analyzed dramatic literature in terms of structure, theme, character, imagery, symbolism, language, and style. B. Reflected and revised collaborative contributions and artistic choices. C. Articulated, justified, and applied personal criteria for critiquing dramatic texts and performances. Theater and other disciplines A. Combined knowledge and skills from other disciplines and from theatre in dramatic forms. B. Analyzed and explained common themes among theater and other disciplines. C. Synthesized complex technologies to enhance theatrical productions. | ||
