Health services are provided at each school for limited health care functions.
These include:
- First aid for
students who are ill or injured
- Hearing and vision screenings
Vision and hearing screening is conducted annually for students in Preschool, Kindergarden, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 7th, 9th, Special Education, and for students who are new to our District, according to State Vision and Hearing Screening Guidelines.
Screenings will be conducted in September and October. Re-screening and follow up for students who do not pass the screening will be ongoing throughout the school year. Vision and hearing referral letters will be sent to parents of students who do not pass the school screenings. (Reference Policy #608, Article 7)
Parents are welcome to contact Wendy Maring, RN at 303-838-7666 x1014 if they do not wish to have their child's vision and/or hearing screened at school.
- Administration of medication as prescribed by a physician
Platte Canyon School District will administer prescription and over the counter medications (including cough drops, acetaminophen, ibuprofen, cough/cold medicine etc.) in accordance with the Colorado State Medication Guidelines:
- Written parent and physician permission are required for ALL medications (See previous page and click on Medication Administration Permission Form to open and print).
- It is the parent/guardian's responsibility to furnish the medication. In order to assure the safety of students, ALL medications must be brought to school by a parent/guardian and must be in the original container.
- All medications must be stored in the health office unless there is written parent and physician permission indicating special circumstances requiring alternative carrying and/or storage of medications (i.e. inhalers, diabetic supplies, etc.).
- Prescription medications must come in the original container labeled with: child's name, name of medicine, times medicine is to be given, dosage, pharmacy name and number and physician's name.
- Planning for students with special needs
- Assistance to families in obtaining needed health and medical services for children
The Registered Nurse who oversees all health services is contracted through Children’s Hospital.
