HEAD LIFEGUARD
QUALIFICATIONS
- Required certifications: American Red Cross Lifeguard Training / First Aid / C.P.R.-P.R.
- Preferred additional certifications: Water Safety Instructor, AFO/CPO, ARC Head Guard, Lifeguard Training Instructor
- Knowledge and skills:
- Thorough knowledge and application of lifeguard surveillance and rescue techniques.
(Must pass a pre-employment test of lifeguard skills and knowledge.)
- Understanding of facility characteristics, rules, policies and procedures.
- Leadership and public relations skills.
- Decision making skills.
- Demonstrated skills in use of equipment such as pool vacuum, cash register, patron tracking software, pool mechanical system, chemical feeding systems.
- Demonstrate effective public relations skills – relate well to children, youth, and the general public.
- Capability to respond to flexible time demands including evening and/or weekend work.
- Capability to work in hot, humid conditions with exposure to chemically treated water.
- Physical fitness for the position including hearing and vision (may be corrected) within normal limits, ability to lift 50 lbs., and endurance for frequent walking, standing, and kneeling.
- Demonstrated ability to perform job duties and responsibilities with minimum supervision.
EMPLOYMENT The Head Lifeguard is an employee of the Platte Canyon School District and, as such, shall adhere to Policies of the Board of Education. Work week: Limited to no more than 30 hours. Schedule: Determined by the Swimming Pool Manager. This is an “overtime non-exempt” position. This is an “at-will” position. Must Exercise regularly to maintain physical fitness.
COMPENSATION Hourly based upon initial placement on the salary schedule. PERA No insurance benefits
REPORTS TO: Swimming Pool Manager
PRIMARY FUNCTION Assure the safety of swimmer pool users by preventing and responding to emergencies and by on-site supervision of lifeguards and other on-duty staff. The Head Lifeguard shall also be responsible for maintaining a high standard of facility cleanliness and maintenance through completion of duties as assigned by the Swimming Pool Manager.
JOB-DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES
- Recognize and respond effectively in emergency situations.
- Enforce all aquatic facility policies, rules and regulations.
- Complete all necessary records and reports.
- Act as liaison between Pool Manager and the lifeguard staff.
- Ensure that all staff members perform required duties, adhere to facility rules and standards, and maintain a high level of professionalism.
- Train staff for all aspects of job responsibilities, review and evaluate staff performance, document any concerns, and submit documentation to the Swimming Pool Manager.
- Demonstrate effective public relation skills. Must have the ability to establish and maintain effective and desirable working relationships with other district personnel and the general public. Relate all patron concerns and comments to management.
- Open and close facility, including all pre-opening safety checks, proper care of register monies, back-up of patron tracking system, securing facility at closing.
- Make daily safety/cleanliness inspections of pool facility. Analyze and correct hazards as applicable, report hazards and corrective steps taken to management.
- Monitor all chemical readings and mechanical operations of pool. Correct or report any chemical abnormalities or mechanical problems immediately. Clear pool and close facility if situation is uncorrectable and presents a safety hazard to patrons.
- Participate in regular in-service training sessions.
- Complete all additional duties as assigned by supervisor.

TOBACCO-FREE, DRUG-FREE, AND ALCOHOL- FREE SCHOOLS
Smoking, chewing, or any other use of any tobacco products by staff, students and members of the public is banned on school property, including: playgrounds, athletic fields, recreation areas, parking areas, and buildings, and in school vehicles or at bus stops.
