TECHNOLOGY DIRECTOR

QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or Technology-related discipline or a minimum of 5 year’s experience as a technology manager, specialist or director of a network system comparable to Platte Canyon’s system.
  2. Demonstrated effective management skills – leadership, planning, budgeting, evaluation and effective communication skills
  3. Demonstrated effective staff and public relations skills.
  4. Leadership experience in network/computer system management, hardware selection and deployment, system troubleshooting, and system maintenance.
  5. Demonstrated knowledge of computer and telecommunication capabilities, operations, networking principles, protocols, and infrastructure.
  6. Demonstrated proficient in the use of standard software packages.
  7. Physically able to lift 50 pounds and perform moderately strenuous tasks (e.g. carrying computer equipment up and down stairs) and to climb ladders to access equipment and wiring.
  8. Demonstrated ability to use hand tools and diagnostic equipment.

REPORTS TO  Superintendent

PRIMARY FUNCTION
Direct and oversee the School District’s Technology Services including planning, purchasing, maintenance and repair of the phone system, video systems and computer networks, software for system operations, and hardware. The Technology Director shall work jointly with the Maintenance Director to assure full operation of fire and security systems.

JOB-DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Develop and manage the District technology budget.
  2. Apply for technology grant funding as opportunities become available including E-rate funding.
  3. Maintain phone, video and computer network systems directly or indirectly by assigning specialists or contracting, within budget parameters, with technology services companies.
  4. Provide software, including system software, upgrades to assure efficient use of technology within the District.
  5. Establish firewalls, virus protection and other measures to assure efficient use of technology and to secure systems and individual computers from inappropriate access or use.
  6. Serve as a member of the District’s Technology Committee and, with the Director of Program Improvement, be responsible for writing and updating the District’s Technology Plan and for complying with state and federal requirements related to such plan.
  7. Establish a system for handling computer problems including methodology for defining the problem, prioritizing work schedules for technology staff, and completing necessary repairs/replacements in a timely fashion.
  8. Assist users in the design and maintenance of District and school websites.
  9. Supervise and evaluate technology department staff.
  10. Represent the District at area and state technology organization meetings.
  11. Attend vendor seminars and training classes and regularly read technical publications and periodicals in order to stay abreast of technological developments.
  12. Be familiar with and abide by Federal and Colorado laws, Board of Education policies, District Regulations, and school procedures that relate to employment with the District.   (See Policy 307, Article 1 – Staff Responsibilities.)
  13. Perform additional/other technology services as assigned by the Superintendent.

EVALUATION
The Technology Director is evaluated annually by the Superintendent. Evaluation is to be based upon fulfillment of duties and responsibilities listed in this job description as determined by observation, review of records and reports, and administrative judgment of the effectiveness and quality of technology services.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
The Technology Director position is a classified at-will position.
Work Year: August through July – 230 days.

ADDITIONAL JOB CONSIDERATIONS & FACTORS
Necessary travel throughout the District requires the use of a private vehicle and Colorado Drivers License. Work outside of regularly scheduled hours may be required to fulfill job duties and responsibilities. Work may need to be performed in narrow, poorly lighted, confined spaces.
