WEIGHT TRAINING CURRICULUM
Standard #12 Each student will have demonstrated competent skills in a variety of physical activities and sports; physical fitness; knowledge of factors important to participation in physical activity; and concepts related to health. Weight Training Description Weight Training classes are designed to build physical strength. Students are tested for strength on six lifts: bench, curl, dead lift, military press, clean, and squat. The total is taken, and by the end of the smear, all students are expected to have improved that score by 25%. Some anatomy, physiology and first aid will be taught. Physical tests of all body area will be given on a regular basis. Prerequisite Must have successfully completed Grade 9 Physical Education and Health Time Allocation Ninety minutes per day for one smear Themes/Topics Weight Room Safety Training Principles Basic Anatomy Basic Nutrition Assessments Performance skills tests Teacher constructed tests and quizzes Standards-based projects Grades and Performance Levels Grades will be based on teacher constructed test, personal observation, and performance tests. Students will also receive a performance level rating based on standards assessments. Weight Training Expectations A. Demonstrated an interest and appreciation of weight training as a worthwhile physical activity. B. Identified and demonstrated safety practices specific to weight training. C. Described the various resistance exercises for specific muscle groups. D. Demonstrated proper technique when performing weight training exercises for specific muscle groups. E. Demonstrated an improved level of muscular strength and endurance. F. Assessed technique used in various lifts. G. Demonstrated an appropriate knowledge level of fitness components, fitness assessment, training principles, basic nutrition, and basic anatomy. H. Identified primary muscle groups used in weight training exercises. I. Described and demonstrated proper warm up and cool down procedures specific to weight training. J. Demonstrated knowledge of weight training principles and their application to muscular strength and endurance. K. Designed a weight training program that would lead to an improvement of muscular strength and endurance and is based on an understanding of training principles. L. Described the benefits of weight training as a lifelong activity. M. Identified various weight training theories. N. Identified consumer issues related to weight training. | ||
